Special Olympics Young Athletes is designed to introduce the world of sports to children with intellectual disabilities aged two to seven and encourage them as well as their families to engage in Special Olympics movement.

Young Athletes focuses on basic movement and sport skills that are crucial for cognitive development to get children with intellectual disabilities ready to take part in sport when they are older. In the meantime, their social skills could be improved through interacting with peers and instructors, which helps building their self-confidence.
